2010 Year in Review

, by Kt Clapsadl

Hey guys! I can't believe that it is the end of the year already, but here it is. I just wanted to post a recap of the past year on the blog. I started reading again after not being able to for year because of a vision problem. That all changed when my hubby bought me a kindle, and it has been absolutely wonderful. In fact I was reading so much that in May right after the RT Convention. I decided to start this blog. Here are my accomplishments for the year:

  •  I read 300 books this year. That is just incredible! Sometimes I wish I read a little slower, as my wallet would thank be, but then I wouldn't get to read as many great books either. I'll probably wind up reading a little less in 2011 as the next semester will be absolutely insane, but that is okay because I will finally graduate.
  • I wrote 96 Reviews that posted on the blog, as well as several more that will post in 2011.
  • I hosted two giveaways and I hope to do many more in the upcoming year.

I hope everyone has enjoyed my blog this year, and will continue to in 2011. I hope to keep bringing quality material to you as well as interact with the awesome book blogging community. You guys are really Awesome!!

This week's question from Parajunkee:

What are your new years book blogging resolutions?

I've never been one for setting resolutions. I'll just have to say that I want to keep reading tons of books as it is my favorite past time. I also want to keep up with the blog and my determination to have at least two reviews posted a week no matter how busy I am. I've been working really hard to get a bunch scheduled in advance, so even when I am really busy I will be prepared.

Review: Arcane Circle by Linda Robertson

, by Kt Clapsadl

Arcane Circle by Linda Robertson
Persephone Alcmedi #4

Even magic can’t solve everything. . . .

After facing down the forces of Fairy in mortal combat, Persephone Alcmedi still must deal with the aftermath. Not only does Seph now possess deadly secrets she must hide from the arcane and mundane world alike, but the dozens of magical creatures who’ve taken up residence behind her cornfield need food and shelter, and there’s still her foster daughter Beverly’s tenth birthday party to plan.

And that’s not all. . . . Seph’s boyfriend Johnny has revealed himself as the wærewolf Domn Lup, and the ruler of the wære world is en route from Romania to make sure Johnny really is the “king” he claims to be. But Johnny’s hiding a dangerous secret: his magic is locked in his mysterious tattoos. He and Seph must find a way for him to reclaim it—fast—despite those who have no intention of letting Johnny gain his full powers. Seph knows that, in the arcane world, strength is always a necessity and power must be constantly proven, but how far is she willing to go to succeed . . . and at what cost?

After the events of the last book Persephone was left pretty much in shambles. Johnny was wounded, perhaps fatally, and many of their allies were killed by the fairies before Seph could get the gate shut. What's even worse is the fact that Menessos's life, or well, undeath, hangs in the balance. She had to stake him in the previous book in order to sever his tie with the fairies and banish them from this world. Only time will tell if he will awaken as a true member of the undead, or whether that staking killed him for good. Before any of them even get a chance to even lick their wounds, Johnny and Seph find out the leader of all the wæres is coming to visit, and it doesn't seem like he wants to hand over any of his "power" and acknowledge him as king. Of course her choice to become Menessos's Court Witch in the last book is still causing problems, as well as a certain elder witches death. But what else can you expect for the the Lustrata, the bringer of balance. It will only get worse before it gets better.

In the last book, the tensions between Johnny, Seph, and Menessos really came to a head. Seph realized that she had strong feelings for both of them, but she couldn't really quantify them. She knows she is very attracted to Johnny and quite possibly in love with him but she also knows the same could be said about Menessos, even though she would wish otherwise. This love triangle issue really took a back seat in this book since there were much more pressing matters, such as the question of Menessos's life in the balance and the race to unlock Johnny's powers. However, there were different events that made me believe that it could potentially cause some major problems in the future. I'm not usually the type of person to wish for the heroine in the book to keep both the men, but in this situation I think she needs both of them equally, albeit each in their own way. It's just a matter of the three of them first accepting this fact, and then learning to cooperate with each other and find a good balance.

The focus of this book was definitely more on Johnny and the wæres rather than the vampires. Don't get me wrong, Seph is still in the thick of it with the vampires, but they definitely took a back seat in this book. Considering the fact that Johnny never really wanted anything to do with wære politics, nor wanted his birthright as the Domn Lup, he seems to be handling his new responsibilities well and really steps up to the plate. Seph really worries about him losing himself in the mess and changing too much, but I don't think that will happen. Of course he will change some, but at his core he will still be the man she is falling for. He still will choose good over evil and stand by her side through everything. It's just going to be a matter of trying to prioritize and learn some balance. Luckily he has a good teacher, the Lustrata.

I enjoyed this book, perhaps not quite as much as the last one due to the lack of Menessos having a major role, but other than that it was really good. I really love both Johnny and Menessos, especially when the time is balanced between them. This may make me greedy wanting both men for her, but I just think they would work well. After some hard truths were learned in this book as well as someone from Seph's past showing up and majorly conflicting things, I cannot wait for the next book. It will be interesting to see what is in store as more and more of the supernatural community starts to find out who Seph really is. As of yet, most do not seem to be reacting very well, but with her iron-clad determination I know she won't give up until her destiny is fulfilled.

Review: Need by Carrie Jones

, by Kt Clapsadl

Need by Carrie Jones
Need #1

Zara collects phobias the way other high school girls collect lipsticks. Little wonder, since life’s been pretty rough so far. Her father left, her stepfather just died, and her mother’s pretty much checked out. Now Zara’s living with her grandmother in sleepy, cold Maine so that she stays “safe.” Zara doesn’t think she’s in danger; she thinks her mother can’t deal.

Wrong. Turns out that guy she sees everywhere, the one leaving trails of gold glitter, isn’t a figment of her imagination. He’s a pixie—and not the cute, lovable kind with wings. He’s the kind who has dreadful, uncontrollable needs. And he’s trailing Zara.

With suspense, romance, and paranormal themes, this exciting breakout novel has all the elements to keep teens rapidly turning the pages.

When her father died, it left Zara nearly dead inside. In a last ditch effort to "wake" her up, Zara's mother sends her to live with her Gram in Alaska. She quickly gets wrapped up in a mess that has been going on for years. Boys are going missing and it's happened before. Meanwhile a mysterious man keeps following her and soon starts trying to draw her out. It seems like he would stop at nothing to get her. The more she digs, the more secrets she uncovers, and she unravels something about her past that is absolutely shocking. In order to survive she must quickly swallow her fears and face them or someone else may just pay the price.

The love interest, Nick, is a very uncommon character. In most books the guy is very "experienced" and the girl usually isn't. In this book however, both of the characters are pretty "pure." Nick hasn't ever even kissed a girl. I found this to be a refreshing change of pace. It makes their relationship so much sweeter. I also love his flaws as they make him all the more endearing. Zara's main flaw on the other hand are not quite so endearing. She tends to over emphasize her desire to stop the world's atrocities that she completely forgets about the here and now. However, when you put that aside, she is a pretty interesting character that is very selfless.

This books was extremely fast paced, to the point where at times I felt like I was missing something. The book just seemed to be so condensed that it actually skipped over a lot of the build up. One example would be the almost instant friendship between Zara, Issie, and Devyn. I would have liked to have seen more of the beginnings of the friendship to make it just a little more realistic. I just didn't really feel everything was established between them well enough so I had a hard time feeling a connection between them.

All in all I found this to be a pretty good book. The pacing was very quick and it was incredibly hard to put down. The resolution at the end was a temporary one at best, and promises for a very interesting continuation of the series. I look forward to digging deeper into the world of pixies and weres and the parts these great character play in it.

Review: Counterfeit Magic by Kelley Armstrong

Counterfeit Magic by Kelley Armstrong
Women of the Otherwold Novella

The first rule of a supernatural fight club? Don't kill your opponent.

When the fighters come with lethal spells, werewolf strength and half-demon powers, that can be a lot tougher than it sounds. It's hard to attract talent if they know they might not leave the ring alive. So when fighters at a California club start dying -- it's bad for business.

Witch detectives Paige Winterbourne and Savannah Levine take the case. Going undercover in the power-heavy arena of the fight club is a welcome change of pace for Paige, relegated to the role of The Wife as her husband struggles to find his place in his family's Cabal--the corporate Mafia of the supernatural world.

As Paige is drawn deeper into new and dangerous corners of her world, she quickly discovers the greatest threat isn't the killer in her sights. It's something much, much closer to home. And this is one fight she can't afford to lose.

This book was sold more as a collector's piece rather than as a book in itself, as the page count would be very low. The previous installment that Subterranean Press released, Angelic, cannot be found for less than $150 for the trade edition and well over $300 for the limited. So, when I saw that another one would be coming out, I had to snatch a copy of both versions before they sold out. That being said, I wasn't really expecting a whole lot on the story end as I bought it for the collecting aspect. After reading the novella, I can honestly say I was pleasantly surprised. It packs a surprising amount of emotion in small amount of pages and is a nice companion story to the rest of the series. That being said I don't recommend it to anyone who hasn't read the rest of the series as there is no setup at all in relation to the characters.

For those not interested in this as a collector's aspect, don't worry as nothing major happens that will make you feel like you are missing something in future books. It was just a very nice "bonus" story. The cover itself is gorgeous as well as the illustrations inside. The limited leather bound version is especially nice well worth the extra price. All in all, this novella was definitely worth the purchasing if you are an avid Kelley Armstrong fan, and will make a great addition to your shelf.

Things are different now. Scientists are able to eradicate love, and the governments demands that all citizens receive the cure upon turning eighteen. Lena Holoway has always looked forward to the day when she’ll be cured. A life without love is a life without pain: safe, measured, predictable, and happy.

My Soul to Steal (Early Review)

, by Kt Clapsadl

My Soul to Steal by Rachel Vincent
Soul Screamers #4

Trying to work things out with Nash—her maybe boyfriend—is hard enough for Kaylee Cavanaugh. She can't just pretend nothing happened. But "complicated" doesn't even begin to describe their relationship when his ex-girlfriend transfers to their school, determined to take Nash back.

See, Sabine isn't just an ordinary girl. She's a mara, the living personification of a nightmare. She can read people's fears—and craft them into nightmares while her victims sleep. Feeding from human fear is how she survives.

And Sabine isn't above scaring Kaylee and the entire school to death to get whatever—and whoever—she wants.

At the start of this book, Kaylee is still "licking her wounds" from the events of the last book. She still loves Nash but for now needs some space to get herself together. She figures she has plenty of time, but then Nash's ex, Sabine shows up. Sabine makes it obvious she wants Nash back and will stop at nothing to get him. She is a mara, literally Kaylee's worst nightmare, so she has an entire arsenal up her sleeve. Kaylee will have to decide whether to step aside or fight for what she wants, and in the end the best girl will win.

When I first read the description for this book I was convinced I would hate Sabine, just because I wouldn't like anyone who could come between Kaylee and Nash. So imagine my surprise when it turns out that I actually like her, a lot. Sure on the outside she may be very manipulative and vindictive, but that's only the surface. Underneath, she is very fragile and has a lot of issues, which considering her past, this is completely understandable. She really loves Nash, and he has been the only constant thing in her entire life so she is convinced that she cannot survive without him. Everything she does to Kaylee, and trust me some of it is nasty, is only because she loves him, not because it's a game to steal Nash from her. I think perhaps in time Sabine could become strong enough to stand on her own two feet and not need Nash so much, but only time will tell.

In this book I was simultaneously proud of and frustrated with Kaylee. She really held to her guns in needing space from Nash and refusing to just jump back into his arms. That took a lot of strength and guts and that is why I was proud of her. However, the reason I was frustrated was that I felt she took the separation to the extreme. She loves him and wants to be with him, but then refused to see him the entire time he was going through withdraw and even longer after that. I just think that if she really wanted him to stay clean, then she needed to help support him, because it only makes it so much harder to resist without love and support. I understand that he did some pretty horrible things, perhaps unforgivable, but the point was that she wanted to forgive him, so she shouldn't have hung him out to dry while he was trying to recover. It's going to be a long bumpy road ahead and I can only hope the two of them will find a way to make it work.

I really enjoyed this book, even more so than the last one. It read very fast and ties things up pretty well. The ending isn't really a cliffhanger, so that is a little relief compared to the cliffhanger of the previous book. I am still very eager to read the next book as things seem to be headed in a very interesting direction. I look forward to more of Sabine, and of course my favorite character, Tod. I can only imagine the trouble that is in store for them and I can't wait to find out how they handle it.  The only reason I'm not giving this a perfect rating is due to Kaylee's lack of support for Nash, but otherwise, it was a very good book that I highly recommend.

Hard Magic by Laura Anne Gilman (Review)
Pack of Lies by Laura Anne Gilman (Review to come close to the release date)

I finally read Afterlight. I've been dying to since I first saw the cover, and for one reason or another it kept being pushed down the list. I really enjoyed it and I'm glad it lived up to the cover. I also started a new series, Paranormal Scene Investigations. I'll be honest that the first book was really hard for me to get through, but the second was so much better. I really enjoyed it, and it made me very eager to continue the series. It's just a matter of wait for the next book to come out.

On a side note, I'm going to be posting no more than 2-3 reviews on here a week, no matter how many I do. I'm on winter break from college now, so I'm trying to get a bunch of reading a reviews written and scheduled in advance for next semester. I'm taking more classes than normal so I can finish and graduate at the end of the semester. So, between that and the kids, I have a feeling my reading and reviewing is going to suffer. So hopefully over this break I'll be able to get a bunch done in preparation so the blog doesn't slack off too much. *crosses fingers*

This week's question from Crazy for Books:

What do you consider the most important in a story: the plot or the characters?

That is a difficult question as both are very important to me. I think I am more forgiving of a slow plot as long as there are awesome characters. However, the best plot in the world can't make up for terrible characters. So, I'd have to say the characters are the most important.

This week's question from Parajunkee:

What did you study in college, or are currently studying and did it lead to your current 9 to 5 or are you doing something totally different?

The first time around in college I studied Graphic Design. However, my hubby is NOT a city person, and that just really requires living or commuting to a city. So I took a couple years off to have our two kiddos. When my son, the baby, was born I started back part time, going for a business degree. This upcoming spring semester will hopefully be my last and I will finally get my degree even if it is years later than my original plan.

Review: Hard Magic by Laura Anne Gilman

Hard Magic by Laura Anne Gilman
Paranormal Scene Investigations #1

Welcome to P.U.P.I.—Private, Unaffiliated, Paranormal Investigations
A handpicked team trained to solve crimes the regular police can't touch—crimes of magic.

My name's Bonnie Torres. Recent college grad, magic user and severely unemployed. Until I got a call out of nowhere to interview for a job I hadn't applied for. It smelled fishy, but the brutal truth was I needed the work—so off I went.

Two days later I'm a PUPI—me and Nick, Sharon, Nifty and Pietr. Five twenty somethings, thrown into an entirely new career in forensic magic.

The first job we get is a doozy: proving that the deaths of two Talents were murder, not suicide. Worse, there are high-profile people who want us to close up shop and go away. We're sniffing out things they'd rather keep buried.

Looks as if this job is gonna get interesting. The only problem is, we're making it up as we go along….

Bonnie, a recent college grad, comes from a very unique background. She was raised in two different worlds and this makes her a little different from everyone else. She's having a terrible time trying to find a job because of this. But then one day, a mysterious phone call changes everything. She finds herself mixed up in a group on the cutting edge of magical forensics. It's up the her and the team to set out and prove their worth in order to keep their jobs, all the while dodging someone's sabotaging efforts. Not everyone wants magic to be policed and if they aren't careful they stand to lose a lot more than just their jobs.

Bonnie is a really interesting character. Her birth father was a lonejack, an unorganized magic user, and her mentor/adopted father is a full fledged member of the council, the organized side of magic. This makes her very unique as she comes from "both sides of the river." In this book lonejacks and council just do not understand the other, but Bonnie does, and this is a rare talent. She also has amazing mental recall which makes her really good at capturing a scene. She also is bisexual, which isn't a problem in itself. However every time she meets someone she spends a long time in her head analyzing her attraction to the person, and that got old after a while.

The most enjoyable part of the book was the characters themselves. The team is comprised of individuals that could not be any more different. But somehow they all blend together to work great together. Don't get me wrong, in the beginning it was rough until they learned to play well together, but as time went on you could really see why the boss men picked each of them. Speaking of the boss men, the lone jack of the two, Vasic was really intriguing. I enjoyed the slight sexual tension between him and Bonnie and I'm eager to see whether it is just one sided or mutual.

This book really had a lot of potential for me, but it ultimately fell short. While the premise behind the book was intriguing and original, the book was paced incredibly slow at times, making it hard to stay focused. It became confusing at times because I just couldn't keep my interest in it enough to really pay attention to the fine details. That being said, I think the series could really pick in future books as the world has been fully established. I enjoyed the characters and their interactions with each other, so hopefully the next book will pick up the pace and make it a really enjoyable book. I'm rating this one a generous three butterflies based on the potential of the series.

Review: Afterlight by Elle Jasper

Afterlight by Elle Jasper
The Dark Ink Chronicles #1

Savannah's most unconventional tattoo artist, Riley Poe, lives on the edge. Now she's put over the edge when her younger brother is taken by a sinister cult led by vampires. Her only ally is the hot-tempered vampire Eli Dupre, attracted to Riley's beauty and rare blood type. To save her brother from certain un-death, Riley faces dangers she's never dreamed of, ruthless bloodthirsty enemies, and an evil of endless hunger that wants to devour it all...

Riley Poe, a former junkie, cleaned up her act when her mother was murdered and Riley was left to raise her little brother, Seth. They lived a pretty normal life together until Seth got himself mixed up in some pretty major trouble. In the mess that follows, Riley's eyes get opened up to a whole world she never knew existed as well as some pretty shocking family secrets. She gets saddled with a sexy hunk of a protector. With the help of her protector and his family, it's up to Riley to rescue her brother before it's too late and he becomes lost to her forever.

Riley is a really awesome character. She is a tough as nails, no nonsense type of girl. I admire her strength and resolve to keep her life clean to raise her little brother. When he gets into trouble she never once hesitates to do what is necessary to save him, even when it means she has to return the life she left in the past. She also is very loyal to another great character, Nyx, her business partner. Nyx is a bubbly and fun character. She balanced out Riley's toughness with her own bouncing personality.

The attraction between Riley and her protector, Eli, is so incredibly strong. While they both spend a good portion of the book trying to deny it as he could be potentially lethal to her, it was obvious that it would only be a matter of time before they cracked. Be prepared for some pretty steamy scenes between the two. I think as the series goes on their relationship will really deepen, and his fierce protectiveness will only get even stronger. The progression in their relationship seemed realistic and I loved how neither of them could really resist the other at all. I hate a relationship where one character feels much stronger than the other, but that definitely wasn't the case in this book.

This book was a really great start to the series. I really love all of the characters, and the ending only promised so much more to come. All of the characters were really interesting and the plot flowed pretty well. The cover is absolutely stunning and I am really glad the story lived up to my expectations. I eagerly anticipate the next installment and more of Riley and Eli.

Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead (Review)
Night's Cold Kiss by Tracey O'Hara (Review)
Death's Sweet Embrace by Tracey O'Hara (Review to come closer to the release date)

This was an absolutely awesome week. On Monday my approval came in for my request for Pale Demon by Kim Harrison on Netgalley. I jumped up and down like a crazy fan girl. I LOVE LOVE LOVE that series, and to get to read the next one early was amazing. I absolutely loved it. I'm already salivating for the next book even though this one won't even be released for another two months. Then on Tuesday I got my copy of Last Sacrifice by Richelle Mead. This is another book that I was really anticipating and while endings are always bittersweet, I really enjoyed the book. I'm happy with the way things ended, but I'm really glad the goodbye wasn't final as there is a spin off series coming next year. On Wednesday my Mom and I went out to Richelle's signing in the Philly area. This actually was the second time I've gotten to talk to her, and she is always so nice. I did have one burning question to ask about the ending and she was happy to answer me. My mom hadn't read the book, so she held her ears while I asked so nothing would get spoiled. It was really funny. Below is a picture of me and Richelle.
