Book Blogger Confessions (1)

This meme is hosted by Tiger from Tiger's All Consuming Books and Karen from For What It's Worth on the first and third Monday of each month.

This week's question:

Deadlines for reviewing and blogging. Do you set them? How do you keep them? What do you do if you can't meet a deadline?

I think I can answer this question with a few pictures:

So, as you can see, I am definitely a scheduler. I used to just post reviews as I wrote them, but some weeks I would have as many as 10, and then others without any at all. Then once, I started getting review requests, it became important to start scheduling as I wanted to make sure to get the reviews posted close to the release date rather than late/early. My ideal posting time of an ARC is within two weeks prior to the release date.

I used to just keep the google calendar as my schedule, but as I started to get overwhelmed, I made the sticky note list. That list makes it easy for me to see when my next unwritten post is due. I used to just read random books and always wound up reading books that weren't due for weeks/months and would somehow overlook one and wind up scrambling at the last minute. I don't force myself to read the books in the order posted here, but I do tend to stick to the ones at the top of the list first. Also, I am pretty flexible with the dates, and am constantly revising the schedule as more requests come in, but it just all seems more manageable, once I put a "date" on it. Granted sometimes that does bite me in the butt as I can get overwhelmed by my inability to say no to a book. I just feel like a heel if I can't review a book sent to me. I've also started to DNF some books, whereas I couldn't in the past. It is a slow process, but I am working on it one step at a time.

Ahh! This is so helpful! Ive been getting into crisis mode because of overwhelming number of reviews requests. And some books that come later are more interesting that the ones that come before?
What to do then?
The scheduling, I should try. Even though Im not into schedules and routine! :P
Thanks! :D Looking forward to you next confession!

It really helped me to have it all broken down so I can easily see what's coming up next. As far as more interesting books that come later, well that can be tricky. Typically what I do is look at how soon my next unwritten review is due. If it is at least 1-2 weeks away, then I will let myself read the new shiny book. Otherwise, I make sure to get caught up first.
I like the sticky note! I was also using the calendar to do all of my organization and it got to be too much. I'm also slowly learning the art of the DNF. My time is precious, and I need to prioritize it according to my tastes!

That sticky note right on my desktop is seriously a life safer.. It saves me so much stress!
Thats cool I have my books to read in review order ...and I think I might try that :)

I hope it works for you!
I admire people who can keep schedules like this. The google docs just doesn't work for me. Just thinking about it freaks me out lol But sticky notes are my friend.
I barely take any review requests now and I keep those books on a separate shelf in order of release date. That seems to work for me because I have to look at that shelf every time I go to the computer.

It took me a long time to find what really worked for me to keep the stress down. I used to look at schedules the same way as you with no less than a little panic. But now they just work.
I recently started keeping track of things a little better, too. I used to just read what I wanted, review them when I was finished, and scheduling be damned. The only time I'd really hold off is if the publisher or author requested me to.

But that way wasn't working out so well. So I made a list of all the review copies I had, organized them by publication date, and am now using that to help me determine what to read and when to review. Much easier this way. Even if I don't get around to reading and reviewing everything I have around the release date, having this system or organization means that things are far less hit-or-miss now, and it's working out far better than it used to. There's something to be said for keeping organized!

Organization is awesome.. I just wish I could apply that to the rest of my life. My house is never orderly lol.
I use Google Calendar too, and always keep the deadlines I post for myself, but blogger fatigue has really put a damper on my reviewing. I need help, like you suggested, but I'm terrified to work with someone I don't know. All the great reviewers already have their own blogs!

Maybe you could kind of audition people. Like have them send examples of their work, etc. I agree that it is scary, and something I have thought about for myself, Im just not sure if I am to that point yet.
I agree with you it does seem more manageable when it is written down and there are some dates. I have a spread sheet that I have gotten a little lax in updating but I think for the most part is up to date and this is how I keep track of what I received when and when the review is "due". I also use Google Calandar... although I really like the idea of a sticky note.

That sticky note right on the desktop screen puts it all right in my face so I don't forget anything. Although I need to get a little better about putting everything on there as soon as I receive the copy. Some times things would slip through the cracks.
Speaking of which, I just found 4 books that I hadn't scheduled.. Whoops. ;)
It's nice to be so organized ... I used to be too until my work commitments got in the way :-(
