Book Blogger Confessions (3)

May 07, 2012 by Kt Clapsadl

This meme is hosted by Tiger from Tiger's All Consuming Books and Karen from For What It's Worth on the first and third Monday of each month.

This week's question:

The holy grail of blogging success! What type of posts do you leave comments on?

I'm pretty bad at leaving comments. I'm just usually not sure what to say other than I agree or good review, so I usually just skip them. I'm much more likely to post a comment on a post that asks a question of the reader as it gives me a starting point. Also I find myself more likely to comment if I liked a book that the poster didn't or vise versa.

How do you try to encourage more comments on your blog?

Again, I'm pretty bad at this. Other than keeping my content original and promoting on Twitter, I don't really do anything to encourage comments. Don't get me wrong, I love them, but I'm not really sure of what to do to get more.

Do you respond to people who leave comments on your posts?

Yes, I try to respond to most comments. There are some where the response is as simple as just saying Thanks, but I feel it is better than nothing. However, I don't typically respond to generic comments left on Meme posts. If the comment isn't something more than "Great pick, check out mine." then I'm not going to respond.

How do you handle negative/spam comments?

I don't think I've ever gotten a negative comment on my blog. I have however gotten a few nasty ones on my amazon reviews. People can be pretty rude, but even so, I just gritt my teeth and ignore them. It isn't worth getting into an argument over. As far as spam comments, they just simply get deleted. A Book Obsession.. is a no spam zone. ;)

Do you use captcha?

I HATE CAPTCHA!! Lol, does that answer your question? In fact one of the biggest reasons I switched my commenting system over to intense debate was because of the lack of captcha. Due to some crazy glitch I couldn't get captcha to turn off on blogger's platform. (I knew how, it just wouldn't work.) It drove me utterly batty, but I'm happier than ever with intense debate's platform.

DOWN WITH THE CAPTCHA!

I now have the song "Down With the Sickness" by Disturbed in my head. Except sickness is becoming captcha. lmao
Well yea, that's what I was thinking too...lol
Ya know, if we were those crazy awesome talented computer people we could edit a video out to change the lyrics to captcha and post it all over the blogosphere. ;)
Damn good idea too.
I used to say great review in comments until I realized some people are offended by that. Then I end up not commenting at all sometimes now.

I just want to let them know I stopped by but I don't necessarily want to come up with meaningful comments for the 15 or so blogs I'm trying to visit.

I'm not offended by it, but I don't usually respond to those comments either. It would just be Thank You repeated over and over again. It gets monotonous.
I hate CAPTCHA too!! Why must it exist?! Sometimes it just isn't worth trying to figure out that little squiggly thing and so I leave without posting my comment. I feel bad but I don't have the time to be squinting and messing around with that thing!

I get so mad at it after I've taken the time to write a thoughtful comment and then I can't get it to go through because of captcha. It's such a pain!
I try to leave comments and good about it, but there are times I am bad. I hate capthca with a passion

I wish I was better at leaving comments, I just never know what to say. I really should work on that.
I'm not a great blog commenter but I am a great blog reader. I made it a New Year's resolution once and have not tried that again. haha I tend to comment on twitter about a post. I don't know why but I've caught myself doing that if I follow the blogger.

I'm just like you. I read a ton of blogs in my google reader. I only comment on a few as it is a pain to have to then go to the site and load it. Takes too much time.
that's interesting that you usually comment if you disagree with the reviewer! i like to read reviews of books that i've read also.

When I disagree I typically have something better to say than "great review" so it is worth the time to me to comment.
I find that I visit more blogs than I comment on, but that's because if I don't have a meaningful comment to leave, I don't. I'm not really a fan of those "Good review" comments on my blog, so I try not to leave them on others. One thing I did start doing with my reviews is to end them with a question. I am finding that it is leading to more comments being left. Plus I try to respond to all comments left on my blog.

Yes, I've noticed that any posts that have a question at the end definitely get more comments. Problem is that I'm never sure what to ask.
I actually prefer to leave comments on reviews because I don't really have anything to say about IMM, Wows, or cover reveals. I usually just give a response to the review or ask a question. Or sometimes I talk about something mentioned in the review but that doesn't really pertain that book. Like I'll say that a book sounds like another or ask questions about the author's style.

CAPTCHA is soooo awful!

Sometimes I don't have much to say about IMM type posts either - and I only leave comments on reviews if I've read a book, or plan on reading it really soon. I don't mind someone visiting my blog and saying "good review" because sometimes there isn't much to say other than that, and I still appreciate that they took the time to say something.
I'm the same way, while I don't leave "good review" comments, I don't mind getting them.
Yeah those type of memes don't spark much conversation at all.
