Yes, Bitter Blood was good, but it also had issues for me. But that has more to do with the repetitiveness of the series as a whole rather than anything specific with the book.

I was tempted to request "Scent of Magic" from NetGalley also, just to continue with the series that I started previously. But when it came right down to it, I wasn't hugely impressed with the first book of the series, so I decided to give it a pass. I hope you enjoy it, though. It just wasn't really for me.

I know what you mean. There are those books that just don't seem to work for us, yet for some reason we still read the 2nd, 3rd, or so on in the series. I'm glad you had the willpower to say no, I have a terrible time with that since I want to know what happens next, even if I didn't like things before.
