Let's Talk With Smash & Kt (28)

May 10, 2013 by Kt Clapsadl

Welcome to the Let’s Talk weekly discussion meme!

Originally hosted by Melissa from i swim for oceans, Smash & Kt took her original inspiration, and made it their own, expanding it to more than just books. Let’s get personal (but respectfully so) and learn more about one another!  Each week, a different question will be posted along with a place to link up your posts and visit other people’s responses. This meme is definitely meant to bring out conversation and meet new people. So, Let's Talk!
We'd love to hear any ideas you have for questions. Submit them Here

This week's question:

Do you take advantage of Freebies? or Do you think Freebies are a good selling tool for authors and publishers? (Thanks, Shirley/Creative Deeds)

If by freebies, you mean Swag and other stuff? Then yep sure, I love cool STUFF just as much as the next gal. I have a spot on my bookshelf that's getting ridiculously full from all the swag, etc.

If you mean freebie promotions on ebooks, then HELL yeah! I love getting free books. I mean who doesn't, especially since you aren't out any money if the book is just terrible for you. You can just move on to the next without wasting anything other than a bit of time. But honestly and time spent reading, even on a bad book isn't time wasted to me.

And yes I do thing they are a good selling tool for authors who have more than one book out. If they offer the first book in the series for free, then tons of people will download it that might not of otherwise. Many will fall in love with the story and wind up purchasing the rest. It also works for stand alones, because if you enjoyed the book, then you'll want to check out the rest of the author's books.

How about you? Do you stalk Amazon for the free book promotions or does the weeding through to find the gems make you leery?

I used to feel bad that I waited until an author I hadn't read yet gave away a book rather than buy it. But then I figured, I'm not stealing it, they're giving it away. And I don't want to shell out for something that could possibly be really bad but hopefully good enough to go buy the paperback. So we win all around.

Exactly. Book budgets are only so big. So it's good to make sure we'll enjoy something before shelling out the big bucks.

I take advantage of freebies, especially when it comes to books. But to be honest, most of the ones that I end up getting because they were free as part of a promotion or something don't end up getting read. The plot may sound interesting, the price is definitely right, but they often end up getting passed over for other books, and instead mentally shelved as books to read when I run out of everything else. I'm probably doing most of those authors a disservice by treating them this way, really, but for some reason that's how my mind seems to work.

I used to download everything I could that was free, on the offchance that maybe it'd be better than it sounded, or in case I did run out of other books to read soon. I've gotten a lot pickier in recent years, though, so while don't end up taking advantage of every single free book I come across, the ones that I do get are ones I think I'm far more likely to enjoy. (Assuming I ever get around to reading them...)

Haha I know exactly what you mean. I have so many "someday get to books", it's ridiculous!

I used to love free swag but now that I have piles of it and nowhere to put it...not so much.

I bought Ikea bookshelves with glass doors with the intention of arranging my swag in them but never got to it.

Oh those freebie books get me every time!

Yeah sometimes I'm not really sure what to do with the swag when it isn't flat/fit inside the corresponding book.

And yep those freebie books are killer!
